Why is supporting a state's right to leave the union in the U.S considered a right wing view....?

....and why is supporting Scotland's right in the UK a left wing view or supporting Republicanism in the UK a left wing view? I know many Americans choose to be ignorant and then blame Pres. Obama and/or Fox News for everything. If you are not educated on Republicanism in the UK, do not answer please. Thank you.
