Connecting To Xbox Live With A Cable Modem?.?

I have a cable modem thats i use to surf the web but everytime i try to connec tto xbox live it says it cant connect to the internet so somebody told me that you reset the modem then turn on your xbox and it'll work but if i do that will i later be able to use my modem for my computer again without like messing up the codes?.
